Trees are central to achieving KMGBF targets through ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, biodiversity-inclusive planning, stronger policies and effective NBSAP implementation. Progress is constrained by limited access to high-quality, genetically appropriate and locally adapted native tree seed and planting material. Restoration therefore requires the right species and genetic resources for present and future conditions. ICRAF Genebank and partners combine conservation, characterization, low-input breeding and selection to strengthen supply, while promoting scalable CPO and BSO approaches within national and global biodiversity strategies.Â
Â
EVENTÂ OBJECTIVESÂ
To engage participants in identifying how tree conservation and genetic resource approaches—including conservation, characterization, low-input breeding and selection—can be strengthened, scaled and integrated into national and global biodiversity and restoration strategies to accelerate delivery of the 2030 Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework targetsÂ
Â
KEY OUTCOMESÂ
- Greater understanding of the role of native tree genetic resources in ecosystem restoration, agroforestry, climate resilience and biodiversity conservation.Â
- Shared recognition of the need for high-quality, genetically appropriate and locally adapted tree seed and planting material.Â
- Identification of practical opportunities to strengthen and scale conservation, characterization, breeding, selection, CPO and BSO approaches.Â
- Recommendations for integrating tree genetic resources into NBSAPs and national restoration, spatial planning and biodiversity policies.Â
- Potential partnerships and priority actions to improve access to suitable native tree germplasm and support delivery of relevant KMGBF targets.Â
