Background:
As Colombia leads the charge at COP16 with the theme "Peace with Nature," this event will delve into how environmental peacebuilding can serve as a powerful tool to address the intertwined challenges of biodiversity loss, land degradation, and conflict. The event will showcase how integrated approaches that foster biodiversity-supportive economies, sustainable livelihoods, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and natural resources management can simultaneously advance peacebuilding and the achievement of the Global Biodiversity Framework goals, the Rio Conventions, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
This session will integrate science, practice, and impact to illustrate how environmental peacebuilding offers governments integrated strategies to achieving Peace with Nature. Drawing from CGIAR's innovative research and contributions from global experts, we will present real-world examples and actionable strategies for embedding environmental peacebuilding into national and global frameworks. Case studies from conflict-affected regions will highlight how environmental peacebuilding is not just a theoretical approach, but a practical, impactful strategy for restoring landscapes, improving livelihoods, and building lasting peace.
The session will culminate with the presentation of the CGIAR position paper on Peace with Nature, offering a blueprint for translating the vision of Peace with Nature into action. With high-level insights from thought leaders and practitioners, this session will offer concrete examples of how environmental peacebuilding can be implemented globally.
