From Displacement to Development: Tackling the root causes of forced migration through biodiversity conservation and climate action
This side event will delve into the complex interplay between biodiversity loss, migration, and displacement. As ecosystems degrade and biodiversity diminishes due to both climatic and non-climatic factors, the livelihoods of millions are disrupted, often forcing communities to migrate or face displacement.
Biodiversity is critical to building climate-resilient, sustainable food, land, and water systems. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the governing body of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), an international treaty adopted at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992. Its objective is to establish agendas, commitments and frameworks for action to conserve biological diversity and use it sustainably, as well as to guarantee the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from the use of genetic resources.
In 2024, for the first time in history, Colombia will host the 16th edition of the biennial Conference on Biodiversity. Each of these Conferences seeks to take decisive measures for the protection of biological diversity.
COP16 will be the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022, which sets out an ambitious roadmap for a world living in harmony with nature. Governments will assess their progress in implementing the Framework and aligning their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). The conference will also focus on advancing resource mobilization, finalizing the monitoring framework, and operationalizing the multilateral mechanism for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from digital sequence information on genetic resources.
CGIAR, working with partners, co-develops nature-based solutions to sustainably use and protect the remaining agricultural biodiversity. By maintaining and restoring genetic diversity, we can adapt to and mitigate climate change, improve soil health, and ensure nutritious diets. These efforts benefit both people and the planet, supporting climate resilience and biodiversity conservation.
