Brazil’s pasture-based livestock sector offers opportunities to advance climate mitigation while increasing productivity and avoiding further pressure on native vegetation. This event will present REAP (Reducing Emissions through Early Slaughter), exploring how shorter cattle production cycles can reduce enteric methane emissions. It will also discuss the carbon balance of Brazilian pastures and recommendations for accounting soil organic carbon stock changes in the national greenhouse gas inventory, considering scientific evidence, data availability, management practices, and IPCC methodological guidelines.Â
EVENT OBJECTIVESÂ
- Present REAP (Reducing Emissions through Early Slaughter) as a strategy to mitigate enteric methane emissions and improve the productivity and climate performance of Brazil’s pasture-based livestock systems.Â
- Discuss scientific evidence on soil organic carbon dynamics in Brazilian pastures and recommendations for their accounting in the national greenhouse gas inventory.Â
- Identify opportunities to strengthen Brazil’s climate mitigation policies and GHG accounting methodologies, supporting evidence-based decision-making and progress toward national climate targets.Â
KEY OUTCOMESÂ
- Increased awareness of the potential of early slaughter to reduce enteric methane emissions and improve production efficiency in Brazil’s pasture-based livestock systems.Â
- Improved understanding of soil organic carbon dynamics in managed pastures and the methodological challenges of incorporating these changes into Brazil’s national GHG inventory.Â
- Identification of recommendations to strengthen methane mitigation strategies, soil carbon accounting, and evidence-based climate policies in the livestock sector.Â
- Enhanced dialogue among policymakers, researchers, and practitioners on integrating livestock productivity, climate mitigation, and robust GHG accounting into Brazil’s climate agenda.Â
