Anthropogenic sand and dust storms (SDS)—driven by water body desiccation, unsustainable irrigation, overgrazing, and land degradation—impose severe health, environmental, and economic burdens across Central Asia, West Asia, and Africa. Historically fragmented mitigation efforts lacked coordination and scalability. This session presents case studies exemplifying the transition to coordinated, evidence-based action through land stabilization, wetland restoration, capability-based land-use management, afforestation, hybrid biological-mechanical systems, and early-warning systems. Attendees gain insights into technical, institutional, and policy mechanisms for scaling interventions, enabling cross-border cooperation, and deploying prioritization tools under resource constraints—essential for resilient, evidence-informed national and regional SDS mitigation programs.
