Invasive alien plant species are a growing threat to rangelands worldwide. They reduce biodiversity, degrade ecosystems, diminish livestock forage, increase wildfire risk, and can reduce grazing capacity by as much as 50 percent. Their rapid spread and ability to transform ecosystems make them a significant challenge for both conservation and sustainable land management.
Addressing invasive alien species requires more than local action. It calls for coordinated approaches that combine scientific evidence, policy support, practical management tools, and the knowledge of pastoralist communities. Stronger legal frameworks, improved data sharing, cross-border collaboration, and sustainable management strategies are all critical to achieving lasting impact.
This webinar will showcase examples of policy and practice that support implementation of Target 6 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Speakers will explore how governments, researchers, development partners, and local communities are working together to prevent, reduce, and manage the impacts of invasive alien species in rangelands.
Building on discussions from a side event at UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia, the webinar contributes to a shared message across the Rio Conventions during the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026: turning global commitments into meaningful action on the ground.
